By Inspector Jill Sellers
January 4, 2017

A call came out at 2:37 P.M. on 1/3/17 for a general fire alarm at 1808 17th Court West. The Fire Department responded to the scene of a community based residential facility, set-up a command, and began investigation to identify the cause for the fire alarm activation. In the home, firefighters found smoke coming from a closet pantry. Flames from an overheated ceiling vent fan in the pantry extended to the top shelf of the food cupboard and had generated enough heat to initiate the pantry’s sprinkler system. After ensuring the fire was extinguished, firefighters checked the attic and surrounding area for damage, removed the cause of the fire from service and updated the facility staff before leaving the scene. The activated fire sprinkler system alerted occupants of the issue, contained the fire to one room of the building and allowed time for the occupants to exit safely. The occupants are currently residing in a temporary location while repairs are made. Fire sprinkler systems limit the spread of the fire, and in this case potentially saved thousands of dollars in property damage and the lives of the people living in the home. It is important to have fire sprinkler systems inspected and maintained annually to ensure they function properly during times like these, providing extra minutes or even seconds that could mean the difference. A sprinkler system saves.
