Williston, ND:

Three firefighters from the City of Williston Fire Department traveled to New York City recently to attend memorials and remember the victims of the September 11th, 2001 attacks.

Firefighters Priscilla Crain and Matt Goode joined Battalion Chief Mike Fronimos on the four day trip to Brooklyn, and stayed in the firehouse that houses Engine Company 201, Ladder Company 114 and Battalion 40. The primary purpose was to attend the memorial services for the five New York City firefighters killed on 9/11 from Engine 201 (Lt. Paul Martini, FF’s Greg Buck, John Schardt and Chris Pickford) and Ladder 114 (FF Jimmy Riches).

One Sunday the three North Dakota firefighters visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum at the site of the 2001 attacks. It was a very emotional and overpowering experience. They attended memorials for Firefighters Pickford and Riches in Queens, NY and then attended a reception following the services. Attending the memorials were firefighters from the FDNY, Massachusetts and North Dakota as well as family and friends of the deceased firefighters.

Since 2002, Battalion Chief Fronimos has attended memorials and fundraisers for Engine Co. 201 and other fire companies, at least twenty times, and has become close friends to many of the New York City firefighters, two of whom were even in his wedding. “It is our responsibility as a society”, said Chief Fronimos … “and especially as firefighters and first responders to ‘Never Forget’, to remember and pass along the stories of the brave men and women who sacrificed everything to save lives that day. We need to remember ALL the victims from that tragedy and all of those that continue to suffer to this day.”

For Firefighters Crain and Goode, the experience was eye opening and inspiring, as well as a chance to ride the fire apparatus in the big city.
